Carnatal: Brazil´s largest off-season carnaval. Do you know it?

Brazil´s largest off-season carnaval turns 19 in this year. Due to its elaborate structure, Carnatal is a huge success renowned throughout Brazil.
This social event – which honors the city´s name – launches Christmas celebrations in Natal, the Portuguese word for Christmas. Over 45 thousand tourists flock to Natal to take part in the festivities and enjoy the beautiful beaches, the warm sea, the region´s cuisine and Natal´s happy and friendly people.
In 2009, Carnatal will be held from the 3rd to the 6th of December at the Largo do Machadão. The carnaval group parades start at 5 pm and end, on average, eight hours later. This will be the event´s 19th season.
The main attractions from Bahia´s carnaval – Brazil´s most important – will be at Carnatal´s “Revelry Alley” for this celebration. Chiclete com Banana, Ivete Sangalo, Asa de Águia, Claudinha Leitte, Ricardo Chaves, Banda Eva, Araketu, Jammil, and also two of Brazil´s best “forró” bands: Aviões do Forró e Cavaleiros do Forró will be in charge of the show.
Each band or artist entertains a separate carnaval group, which are made up of 4000 revelers, on average. Each reveler purchases their own costume (known as abadá) as has fun for about 5 hours behind the sound truck that carries the band, along a route approximately 3,800m long, of which 800 are the “Revelry Alley”, the major venue of the event, where over 20 thousand people, in boxes and on the grandstands, watch and enjoy the carnaval group parades.
In the special boxes, which hold “parties within the party”, the revelers have areas that provide plenty of comfort and entertainment inside a special structure. During the party´s four days there are diversified attractions, such as DJs, internet access, air conditioned areas, beauty salons for a change of look, free food and drinks, relaxation areas, a food court and dance floors.
The power of the Carnatal brand still attracts investments by leading companies and brands, such as Skol, Pepsi, Red Bull, Cachaça 51, Elma Chips, LG, Valor Imóveis e Método Construtivo (Real Estate), and Cia. da Natureza, besides Maurício de Nassau, FARN and UnP universities.
There are extensive reports in national television networks such as Band, RedeTV!, and SBT as well as in radio stations, web sites, and the official coverage in Contigo! Magazine, which is due to start this year.
In order to ensure the revelers´ safety Destaque Promoções will count on 2,000 officers per day, from the State´s Civil and Military Police Departments, the Fire Brigade, the Highway Patrol, and the Federal police force who will work together.
There will be 70 CCTV cameras, 10 observation towers (with 4 officers each) and 8 elevated platforms (with 8 officers each) along the route to monitor the area. This makes Carnatal the safest off-season carnaval in Brazil. Medical assistance and ambulances are also available in case of emergency.
